Happy 4th of Jaws-ly to everyone! Truly the reason for the season. I have tomorrow off and I plan to spend most of it at the movie theater, catching up on some films I’ve missed since Summer Camp took over my life (one whole week ago).
The Line-Up So Far:
Past Lives
Asteroid City
You Hurt My Feelings
Jaws (depending on if I watch it tonight, but who knows, maybe I’ll just watch it twice)
Upcoming events (in real life!)
I’m telling a good old ridiculous dating story for Serving the Sentence on July 11th
Serving up some nostalgic comedy for a cool fun book launch at the Book Cellar on July 18th
And most recently, a favorite poem of mine was included in The Second Bullshit Anthology by Bullshit Lit - Book or PDF for purchase
And virtually, TONIGHT is the start of the first Is This Film Club? Series: The Films of 1976! Join us on Zoom to discuss some of the greatest films from just one year in American film. Tonight is the welcoming/intro session, no advance movie watching necessary! Sign up here!
180) THE BEAR: SEASONS 1-2 (2022-2023)
I rewatched Season 1 in time for Season 2 and woo, yes it is a stressful show! In a fun way! Mostly! In season 2, I'm so glad we got to know a lot of the other characters better. We get to see more home life, private moments, etc. For me, Ebon Moss-Bachrach is the absolute stand out of the season. Such a torn up dirtbag in season 1 trying to be somebody new, but he's just not that evolved yet. Such a great performance. Carmy and Sidney, I ship it ugh but also Marcus is right therrrre. Anyway, I was overjoyed to see some familiar faces, and I'm not talking about Bob Odenkirk, I'm talking about some sweet Chicago friends. But yes also that family dinner episode made me want to stress puke. In a fun way! Jon Bernthal hot.

181) INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY* (2023)
Y'all, it's always fun to watch an Indiana Jones movie. I had such a good ding dang time. This movie is fun, it's wild, it's sweet, it's exciting, and the ending is fucking insane. Sure it should 25 minutes, sure they should've let Phoebe Waller-Bridge be sluttier, sure the CGI faces were borderline polar express. But I'll watch it again and then I'll watch it again after that. Harrison Ford is awake, baby! This ain't no Call of the Wild! He's up and at 'em and really going for it. Everybody's really going for it and I absolutely appreciate that. Antonio Banderas hot.
Ultimately, I'm so proud of my husband and so happy for him.

182) THE AGE OF INFLUENCE: SEASON ONE (2023)
Some wild rides here. I hadn't really heard of any of these people, and I fancy myself as someone who is terminally online. So it was interesting going in blind. People are terrible! What the fuck! Overall, this was interesting enough, but not hugely revelatory and honestly a little depressing.

183) BURDEN OF PROOF: SEASON ONE (2023)
I'm not sure if there will ever be a season two, but god I hope so. A pretty devastating journey, to be honest. Some fascinating personalities here and some great northeastern accents, but yeah this was pretty mesmerizingly melancholy.

184) ROCK HUDSON: ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWED (2023)
I love Old Hollywood (for all its horribleness), so I was very in the pocket for this. I appreciated the compassion this doc had for its subject, beyond the sensationalism it could have embraced. I found it very entertaining, funny at times, and ultimately incredibly sad. Especially as my country seems to be devolving when it comes to acceptance. But an amazing performer and a worthy documentary.
